Bystander Mode: Your Phone's Voice in Emergencies

LifeLine EuropeMarch 9, 20262 min read

Bystander Mode empowers your phone to communicate vital information when you can't. Learn how to ensure your safety as an expat in Europe.

## The Problem Bystander Mode Solves Imagine you are in a road accident in rural France. You lose consciousness before you can call anyone. A local driver stops and finds you. They speak no English. Your phone is locked. With no way to read your medical history, no way to identify your emergency contacts, and no way to know your allergies or medications, that person can do very little except call 112 and wait. Bystander Mode changes that.

 ## What Is Bystander Mode? Bystander Mode is a full-screen emergency display that appears on the lock screen of your phone without requiring a password. When activated, it shows any French-speaking bystander everything they need to know in their language: - Your name - Blood type - Known allergies - Current medications - Medical conditions - Emergency contacts with phone numbers - Your GPS coordinates - A large button to call 112 directly All of this is presented in clear, plain French with bilingual English subtitles. No app navigation required. No password. No language barrier.

 ## How to Activate It Bystander Mode is pre-configured in the LifeLine Europe app. Once you have filled in your medical profile, the information is immediately available on the Bystander screen. You can preview it from the home screen at any time to confirm it looks correct. The mode is designed to be triggered by a bystander, not you. Instructions on-screen tell the finder how to call for help.

 ## What Information Should You Include? The more complete your profile, the more useful Bystander Mode becomes. At minimum we recommend: - Blood type (this can affect treatment decisions significantly) - Any severe allergies, particularly to medications such as penicillin or aspirin - Any conditions that might affect emergency treatment, such as diabetes, epilepsy, or a heart condition - At least one emergency contact who can be reached quickly You do not need to include everything. A partial profile is still far better than nothing.

 ## The Legal Disclaimer Bystander Mode includes a banner stating that the information shown is self-reported and has not been verified by a medical professional. This is an important safeguard. Emergency responders should use the information as a starting point, not a definitive medical record.

 ## Available on All Plans Bystander Mode is available on the Free plan. You do not need a paid subscription to protect yourself with this feature. Fill in your profile, check the Bystander screen, and you are covered.
